I don’t remember exactly how long it’s been since I started thinking about doing some sort of video program, but it’s probably been close to 15 years.
In that time, I’ve planned a number of projects and then backed out. I always had a good reason — or good excuse — but the core of it all is that I didn’t know what I was doing. I was afraid I would be humiliated. I thought I might look like a fool. So I came up with reason after reason to quit.
This time was different. I’m not entirely sure why. But whatever the reason is, the first episode is now online. You can watch it for yourself at the bottom of this article.
I had intended to call it David McElroy Live, but I changed it at the last second to the David McElroy Show. I realized that I wouldn’t always want to do the show live, so I wanted to give myself some flexibility to do prerecorded or live shows.
For now, my focus is on making the content at least 10 times more interesting and then gaining at least 100,000 subscribers. Unless I get much better — and quickly — I’m not going to attract the audience that could make the project worth the time and effort.
I have a long list of things that are wrong with this first episode. It’s probably 90 percent of what I had hoped it would be for a very first episode, but a lot has to get better.
The content has to be snappier and move more quickly. My performance has to improve. I need more interesting feature ideas. And I need better editing and better graphics.
But for now, I’m just happy to have made the first step. I don’t know exactly what’s next. I don’t know how I’ll change the show or streamline it. I just know that the nightmare of getting the first show done is finally over — and it’s time to get some rest before figuring out what comes next.
