The good news is that public pressure has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detnews.com\/article\/20110714\/METRO02\/107140475\/1361\/Charges-dropped-against-Oak-Park-woman-over-veggie-garden\" target=\"_blank\">forced the city to drop the charges<\/a>. The bad news is that she&#8217;s still facing possible jail time for another offense. The bureaucrats are determined to make an example of her, it seems.<\/p>\n<p>Although the city has dropped the charges about her vegetable garden, she was also charged with failure to have a license for her dogs. After she was charged in June, she immediately bought the license and showed the paperwork to officials. The woman&#8217;s lawyer said that charges are normally dropped in such a case after a person buys the license, but the city is pursuing this charge.<\/p>\n<p>The lesson: Don&#8217;t make bureaucrats angry. If they want to punish you, they&#8217;ll find a way to do it.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> Hat tip to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theagitator.com\/2011\/07\/15\/new-charges-in-the-oak-park-veggie-garden-madness\/\" target=\"_blank\">Agitator<\/a> for alerting me to this update on the story.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Update:<\/strong> At her blog Friday afternoon, Julie Bass <a href=\"http:\/\/oakparkhatesveggies.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/15\/trying-to-be-clear\/\" target=\"_blank\">clarifies and corrects<\/a> some things which the newspaper story apparently got wrong.
