You\u2019re such a good neighbor!\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My neighbor Cora \u2014 a retired teacher \u2014 called me while I was driving to the office earlier today to remind me that she wants to take me out to dinner sometime. We\u2019ve talked about going out together, but we\u2019ve never gotten around to coordinating a time. As she was about to get off the phone, she said, <em>\u201cI love you. You\u2019re such a good neighbor!\u201d<\/em> And I told her that I loved her, too. I wonder how upset the racists of the unquestioned Jim Crow world \u2014 only about six decades ago \u2014 would have been that a white man and his elderly black neighbor care abut each other in such a way.
