{"id":3468,"date":"2011-08-31T20:51:41","date_gmt":"2011-09-01T01:51:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.davidmcelroy.org\/?p=3468"},"modified":"2011-08-31T20:54:44","modified_gmt":"2011-09-01T01:54:44","slug":"tenn-woman-threatened-for-allowing-daughter-to-ride-bike-to-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davidmcelroy.org\/?p=3468","title":{"rendered":"Tenn. woman threatened for allowing daughter to ride bike to school"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmcelroy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Bike-to-school.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3469\" title=\"Bike to school\" src=\"http:\/\/www.davidmcelroy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Bike-to-school.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a>We see programs today <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=10073348\" target=\"_blank\">encouraging kids to ride bikes to school<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; just like the Beaver did years ago &#8212;\u00a0but the Nanny State in\u00a0Elizabethton, Tenn., apparently thinks that a mother can&#8217;t be trusted to decide whether her 10-year-old daughter is mature enough to ride her bike to school.<\/p>\n<p>The mother says she&#8217;s been threatened with being charged with &#8220;child neglect&#8221; for allowing her daughter to bike a mile to school and back each day.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bikewalktn.blogspot.com\/2011\/08\/arrested-for-riding-bike-to-school.html\" target=\"_blank\">Teresa Tryon tells her story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;On August 25th my 10-year-old daughter arrived home via police officer, requested to speak to me on the front porch of my home,&#8221; Ms. Tryon said. &#8220;The officer informed me that in his &#8216;judgement&#8217; it was unsafe for my daughter to ride her bike to school.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Tryon called the mayor&#8217;s office and the chief of police office in order to determine what laws she was breaking by allowing her daughter to ride her bike to school.\u00a0 Her daughter&#8217;s route to school was reasonably safe.<\/p>\n<p>Major Verran of the police department returned Ms Tryon&#8217;s call.\u00a0 She said he told me, &#8220;He had spoke with the District Attorney&#8217;s office, who advised that until the officer can speak with Child Protective Services that if I allow my daughter to ride\/walk to school I will be breaking the law and treated accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>She asked, &#8220;What law she would be breaking, to which the answer was &#8216;child neglect.'&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more-->The state doesn&#8217;t believe you are competent to make decisions for yourself. It doesn&#8217;t believe you can make decisions for your children. If you aren&#8217;t following the herd and doing what everyone else today is doing, you will be punished.<\/p>\n<p>The blog post about this doesn&#8217;t say what the girl is doing in the meantime, but the woman was told that her daughter had to ride a school bus. Heaven forbid the daughter learn some responsibility and get exercise.
