There were times when my father was loving and good to us, but we never knew when he was going to turn into a raging and dangerous monster.<\/p>\n

We typically weren\u2019t subjected to serious violent abuse, but when he turned into the angry monster \u2014 who I nicknamed \u201cthe Ogre\u201d when we were young \u2014 the psychological abuse was damaging in a very different way.<\/p>\n

This is the story of one of those terrifying days \u2014 something that my sisters and I came to refer to as the \u201cwho-moved-the-belt incident.\u201d There\u2019s no reason that anyone should have to live with this level of abusive control, but it\u2019s especially damaging to young children \u2014 who don\u2019t understand that this behavior isn\u2019t normal.<\/p>\n
