For those of us who have been thinking about the idea of autonomous cities for many years, the idea of a good source for realistic information is like a dream come true. I’ve been researching various ideas for years and found precious little. The best source of info I’ve ever seen has just gone online this week, so I highly recommend the new Free Cities Institute website.
I’ve been talking to you about free cities for months. (I’ve covered the idea probably half a dozen times, so there are other stories.) Although I’ve been pursuing the idea of independent entities for more than a decade, it was only recently when I met Michael Strong and was acquainted with the idea of autonomous free cities within existing countries. It’s not the full independence that I see as the eventual future, but it’s a huge leap forward over anything realistic today. I’m a believer in the idea, and I hope to be involved with one of these free cities very soon.
Strong and his wife, Magatte Wade, will be appearing on a John Stossel program tonight called “What if Libertarians Were in Charge.” In the very last segment of the show, the couple will be discussing how free cities can reduce poverty and create jobs, hope and prosperity in the developing world. You’ll find the show on the Fox Business Network on the following days and times: Thursday, Sept. 29, at 10 p.m. eastern; Saturday, Sept. 30, at 9 p.m. eastern; Sunday, Sept. 30, at midnight eastern; and Sunday, Oct. 1, at 9 p.m. eastern.
I’ve never talked with Wade, but I can tell you that Strong is an articulate and passionate person with a head that understands the moral case for freedom and a heart that cares for making the world a better place for everybody to live. I anticipate a powerful case for freedom — not just in a theoretical way, but in a practical way that we can all get excited about participating in.
I strongly encourage you to spend some time on the Free Cities Institute website. The site explains the legal framework for the idea and how it can work. It also talks about the guidelines the organization has set up for who it will work with in various countries to help others establish these cities.
This isn’t pie in the sky. It’s something very real. It’s going to happen. If you want to be a part of history, get familiar with this idea and find a way that you can be a part of it. That’s what I’m planning to do.
