Without peaceful breakup plan, U.S. faces violent, angry collapse

By David McElroy · August 8, 2019

The United States is a speeding train filled with people who hate each other. Some groups try to take over the engine and force everybody to go their way. Many other people are just trying to travel on the train and ignore the hate-filled people fighting to take over the engine. They just want to live their lives and be left alone.

But as the train speeds faster and faster through the dark night of a rotting culture, almost all of the people on board ignore what’s obvious. This train is speeding toward the edge of a cliff — and those who don’t get off are about to be in a terrible, violent crash into a deadly abyss.

A society in denial about the obvious looming disaster makes me question my own perceptions of reality. Either I’m crazy — which is possible — or else the collective public is suffering mass delusion which blinds them to the cliff ahead.

This country is simmering with group anger and resentment — and those of each group have a narrative which paints them as the real victims.

Ignore the issue of which groups you believe might have legitimate gripes, because that is irrelevant to the risk analysis. All that matters is that you have groups of people who believe circumstances have left them oppressed in one way or another.

Ignoring the way each of these groups feel will only make things worse. Choosing good guys and bad guys won’t help, either.

The only thing that can possibly help is to get serious about finding a peaceful solution that will allow these fractured groups to live apart from one another if they choose to do so. Continuing to pretend that everybody is magically going to get along in one big, happy family is pure denial.

This simmering “melting pot” is going to explode soon.

If you could go back into history to live just a few years before the collapse of any major empire or dynasty, you would find people living their normal lives and believing that things would continue much as they had always been. Some people have always been better at seeing what’s coming, but most people assume that life will go on just as they’ve always known it.

People today believe the same thing, but they are wrong — just as people throughout history have been. And when people have had their lives turned upside down by economic collapse, civil wars, revolutions and invasions, they have paid a high price, even though they didn’t create the problems that destroyed their society.

The same is true here. We are heading for the cliff — as the anger and divisions become more pronounced — but most people assume things will continue to be safe and stable. And when the inevitable collapse happens, everything will change.

I’m disgusted by the personal hatred that people on both sides of the political mainstream have for one another — and how expressions of that hate are wildly popular on social media among people who I would have thought were better people than to join in. Political hate has become a sport.

You cannot complain about one group of people hating another group when you routinely stereotype groups you don’t understand and then attack them with vitriol. Hatred is ugly, even when it’s couched in humor. You are making things worse.

But as much as I lament this increasing hatred in the public sphere, I see it as something which points to where we’re going. Although I wish I could convince people to love instead of hate, the cold, hard truth is that they have no interest in ceasing their hatred.

So every group will continue to hate those they don’t understand. Every group will have a narrative of its own oppression. And then there will come a time — maybe five years, maybe 20 years, maybe longer — when the divisions and the long-term debt bomb will all come together and send this train off the cliff into destruction.

When that happens, your money will be gone. When these changes start happening, all of the experts will cry, “How could we possibly have seen this coming?!”

And some of us will say, “Hasn’t it been obvious for years?!”

If the leaders of these groups were rational, they would be planning for this by developing an orderly plan by which different groups can go their own way if they choose. That would reduce the carnage that’s coming. It would save a lot of wealth. It would make the transition far easier for all of us.

But that’s not going to happen.

Every politician and every group wants its own way. Every group believes that it has the right to force everyone to obey its plans. Almost nobody is proposing the peaceful breakup that could stop this. And they’re not going to do that.

Since there will be no peaceful breakup plan — and because there will be little or no warning — those who can should get out while they still can. There will be places to send money. There will be places to start new lives. There will be paths to saving your family and your assets. But almost nobody will pay attention until it’s too late.

Those who refuse to see it coming — or don’t have the money to leave — will be at the mercy of forces they cannot control.

I don’t know when we will hit the cliff, but I’m absolutely certain that’s where we’re heading. To continue ignoring the cliff ahead is to play the ultimate game of chicken. It will eventually be too late to get off this doomed train.

Future Photo Display

As part of my effort to rid my life of social media, I will no longer display links to my two Instagram accounts here. Those accounts will be dormant for the time being and will eventually be deleted. I plan to have a method for displaying photos here instead, but the solutions I’ve tested so far have been disappointing. I’m still working on it.

I loved finding the pictures, but seeing these photos left me thinking about the effect it has on us when we lose an animal we love — and it was also a reminder of how much my life has changed for the last nine months it’s been since I lost her. I wrote an essay about this. You can find it as the most recent post at davidmcelroy.org right now if you’re interested. I really do miss this sweet girl.

The webcam caught this video tonight that shows Alex asleep in a cat bed on my desk when Sam decided he wanted the same bed. Sam got part of the way into the bed, waiting until Alex decided to strike back — and then he chased Alex out of the spot and went to sleep. This was originally about three minutes long, and I cut out the dead parts to make it slightly more than a minute. Sam has been totally intimidated of the other two for most of the last two years, so this is new.

Briefly

It hasn’t happened yet, but there’s a possibility that I might be taking in a fourth feline. A couple of months ago, a cat-loving neighbor asked whether I’d seen a “tuxedo cat” hanging out in the neighborhood. I hadn’t, but this guy eventually wandered past my house a few weeks later — and we haven’t been able to find evidence that he has a home. I’ve been giving him water and food for the last week and he finally let me pet him two nights ago. He’s purred for me two nights in a row and he let me take a low-quality selfie with him Thursday night. Tonight, though, he let me pick him up and bring him inside to look around. This went surprisingly well, as you can see from this photo. I don’t know whether he’ll be joining the family, but I’m certain that Alex, Oliver and Sam would vote no, at least until they get to know him. I’m trying to make certain he doesn’t have a home, but if he does join us, what do you suppose his name will be?

It turns out that the radical far left has been training “Antifa cats” to sabotage anything important to Donald Trump. Everything he did was perfect. Honest. It was all the cats’ fault. Arrest all the cats! This is the latest of my ridiculous satirical shorts. Please go watch it. Then “like” it and subscribe. Please. I’m begging you. (Too much?) Although a couple of the previous videos have had views in the hundreds, most have still been seen by fewer than 20 people. So I seem to be having trouble letting people know that page exists.

Here’s the latest of my ridiculous parody shorts. It crossed my mind Tuesday to wonder what a slick and fast-talking car dealer might do right now to try to turn the high price of gasoline to his advantage. So I conceived of a fat and lovable character who tried to sell cars that don’t use any fuel — and then I started wondering if it would be funnier if all the characters were felines. Designing the King Cashpaw character took about four hours, but the rest took only another four hours, so this was a relatively quick piece that virtually wrote itself. I know it’s almost impossible for these parody videos to find a larger audience, but at least they amuse me — and there are 19 of them on my YouTube page now. The first few were very limited, but they’re getting more complex.

The Republican Party is dead. It still exists in name, of course, but it’s nothing but a shell. All that’s left are idiots and stooges and con men of the MAGA party. When Donald Trump is gone — which won’t be long — those populist idiots and pragmatic fools will have no one to follow. Democrats will thrive. They will take more power than ever and they will push the federal government further to the radical far left than ever. When that happens, don’t just blame Trump if you’re a conservative. Blame every person who has claimed to be a conservative and has given up on principles, character and everything else that Republicans once claimed to stand for. As someone who worked as a GOP political consultant for many years, this is disgusting and disturbing to me. Those who have enabled Trump to have almost unchecked power are going to be shocked when they see what they will unleash in the long run. It’s been plain all along what this narcissistic con man is. It’s your fault that you chose to pretend not to see what he really is.

We are ruled by the dumbest and most incompetent people among us — and we have a system which allows stupid and irresponsible people to force the costs of their idiocy onto smarter and wiser people. Can we get away with that? Yes, for quite some time. But we eventually reach a point at which the dumbest of the dumb — who are habitual liars and mentally ill fools — lead us to the disasters and destruction that some of us have seen coming for years. We are approaching that point. And yet most of the idiots around us still wave their rhetorical banners of support for the evil people who are leading us to ruin — and all of them point their fingers at someone else, never noticing that their own enthusiastic support of evil is to blame. When things finally fall apart, blame yourself for your blindness to the evil, not whoever happens to be in power when it happens.
