Mom of out-of-control teen thug must share blame for ugly arrest

The headlines made it sound like another ugly case of police brutality. CNN said, “Video shows Florida officer hitting 14-year-old twice during arrest.” The Miami television station which first reported the news said, “Mother, attorney of teen punched by Coral Springs officer at mall speak out.”

The video shows a male and a female officer with a teen on the ground. The male officer hits the girl in her side as she is held on the ground. My first instinct is to think it looks excessive. Why is he hitting her?

The girl’s mother is angry at police and quickly hired an attorney since she wants “justice to be served.”

And then I read about what led to that point shown in the video. What caused two police officers to be violently arresting a 14-year-old outside a shopping mall?

Her name was Hannah. I suppose she was about 5 or 6 years old. She looked hurt.

“But you promised, Daddy,” she said. Her voice was barely louder than a whisper. Her eyes were wet, as though she was about to cry.

“I don’t know anything about pumpkins anyway,” the man said, not even looking at her. “Your mom and your granddaddy can help you. I’ve got to leave. I’ll be back Monday.”

“But you promised.”

There was a long silence and then the little girl quietly started to sob. Her mother looked angry, but you could tell from the tired look on her face that she had been through things like this with her husband before. My bet — and it’s just a guess — is that she expected it.

Why would she lie about something so ridiculous?

Warren lied — and continues to lie — because she is held captive by an evil idea. It’s an evil idea which is at the root of progressive left politics today. It’s called “identity politics.” It’s the idea that your group identity gives you worth and identifies your values. It’s a core value of the collectivist — and it stands in stark contrast to the notion that every individual has value of his own, regardless of his ethnicity or origin or skin color or any other group identity.

Identity politics is the enemy of individual liberty. It always will be. But let’s start with the facts of Warren’s case.

I couldn’t care less whether Elizabeth Warren has a Native American ancestor or not. It’s an idiotic controversy and it always has been. But if you’ll take the time to understand the reasons for her lie, you will understand a foundational error in progressive left thinking.
